Retailers are finding it hard to fight scalpers, but opening more brick-and-mortar stores is probably the best solution. Yes, the fact that there’s a shortage of RFID tags that allow spoiled goods can be blamed on scalpers, but retailers need to take responsibility too.
Microsoft is a well-known company and has been the market leader in the gaming industry for a very long time. In an effort to fight scalpers, they are emailing customers directly with purchasing options for new Xbox Series X bundles.
The bundles come with an Xbox Series X, an extra controller, and one game. The Verge’s Tom Warren notes customers can choose from many popular titles including Madden 22, GTA V, Rust, Far Cry 6, Hasbro Family Fun Pack, or Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. Xbox One units are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you are not guaranteed to get one. For safety, the purchase links are connected to your Microsoft account. Last week the company announced that it will only allow one purchase per customer.
It is unclear exactly how Microsoft is choosing customers to email. Warren speculates that they are giving links to those who recently shopped on the US Microsoft online store and purchased Xbox software or hardware.
Microsoft’s idea for discouraging scalpers seems better than the idea of Japan-based retailers Nojima Denki and GEO, which bested them by writing customers’ names on console packaging. Whoever buys the console will then know that it was not sold with the intention of being resold. Some companies like Walmart have developed more complicated queues that try to prevent bots and repeat shoppers.
